Taking a cue from Rolling Stone and its recent “Playlist Issue” (RS 1119 – 12/9/2010), I have decided to come up with a playlist of my own:
THE GREAT FEMALE ROCK VOCALISTS.
Rock ‘n’ roll is stereotypically a male domain, so it is always nice when a talented lady breaks through.  It is no surprise that there are women out there who can pull off the high-pitched screams of rock music, but it is doubly impressive when those same women can pull off the attitude required for such music.  I have taken notice of several noteworthy chanteuses in my years of musical connoisseurship, so much so that I would one day like to record an album of covers of songs originally performed by great female rock singers.  The songs on this playlist are among the sort of songs I would include on that album.

Pat Benatar – “Heartbreaker”
In her career, Pat Benatar was more often pop princess than she was rock queen, but when she was rocking, she was incomparable, obviously reaching her apex with “Heartbreaker.”  The trilling in “born to be-e-e-e-e” is enough to set your ear on fire, and the guitar playing of her husband Neil Giraldo makes for quite the partnership.

Heart – “Crazy on You”
Interestingly enough, I consider “Barracuda” to be Heart’s best song, even though I believe that “Crazy on You” is the best showcase of Ann Wilson’s vocals and of Nancy Wilson’s strumming.  Those bursts of “Crazy!” could only have come from a singer with one of the richest, deepest, fullest voices of all time.

Jefferson Airplane – “White Rabbit”
This entire song is little more than a slow build to Grace Slick belting out “Feed your head” at the end.  But, of course, that is a hell of a conclusion to build up to.

Paramore – “The Only Exception”
Most songs on this list have a signature line in which these ladies belt it out for all their worth.  In “The Only Exception,” that line is “I’ve got a tight grip on reality,” in which Hayley Williams makes it clear that she is the female rock voice to be taken seriously, in case you hadn’t noticed.

Florence + the Machine – “Heavy in Your Arms”
It turns out that even in rock music, violin accompaniment is quite the powerful addition for a lady singer.  In the case of “Heavy in Your Arms,” that power is best described as leaden.  With each declaration of “heavy,” you can just feel Florence Welch dropping under all the weight she carries, yet somehow simultaneously rising above it.

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals – “Paris (Ooh La La)”
Grace Potter & the Nocturnals are not quite like any other artist in the musical world.  One simply does not hear any rock bands this brassy, this rootsy, this down-and-dirty anymore, at least not any fronted by a woman.  And it’s not like there were any rock ‘n’ roll bands completely like them at any time anyway.  They are quite the hodgepodge: Grace has a fashion sense more akin to Tina Turner as opposed to her rock goddess forebears, while the mustachioed nocturnals are a more nattily dressed Lynyrd Skynyrd.  Anyway, in “Paris,” Grace’s screeching counterpointed with irresistably face-melting riffage (or a well-timed drumbeat) is rock music perfection.

Bat for Lashes – “What’s a Girl to Do?”
Natasha Khan – proof that you don’t need to belt it out to be a rock girl.  If you are comfortable with being on stage, but not comfortable using your lungs’ full force whilst on stage, then that’s okay.  You may have to go with the indie route, but for some talents, that is the only appropriate way to go.

Janis Joplin – “Piece of My Heart”
The title says it all.

Metric – “Eclipse (All Yours)”
Well, look at that – two songs from the Twilight: Eclipse soundtrack on the same playlist.  When Emily Haines announces that she is “all yours,” it is right on the edge of annoyingly cutesy and delightful ear candy.  Thankfully, it remains firmly on the side of an aural tickling.  She is hard to characterize, as her uniqueness is subtle, and not in-your-face like much of rock music.

Kelly Clarkson – “Already Gone”
I am stretching my category here, as I would consider Kelly a pop, and not even pop-rock, singer.  But her style does bear some influences of rock predecessors, particularly Pat Benatar.  I would like to see the original American Idol’s career head in a more rocking direction, but if she instead continues to put out ballads on the level of “Already Gone,” then that’s okay too.

Björk – “Human Behaviour”
With a strong electronic presence and otherwise wildly varied use of instrumentation, Björk barely qualifies as a rock singer.  But she could be a straight-up rock singer if she wanted to be.  Taking her songs’ vocal rhythms in whatever directions she wants to take them in, she is able to hit whatever notes she wants to hit, whenever, and as often, as she wants to hit them.

Christmas Eve in Washington, D.C.
Well, there you go. Sticking with the political angle for the opening, but actually doing something out of the ordinary with it. It is clear that the writers have plenty of material on Obama, Hilary, Rahm, Pelosi, and Biden, but the focus has lately been getting fuzzy when they try to make a sketch around it. The solution, apparently: keep it simple. B+

Jeff Bridges’ Monologue
It was a treat to see Cookie Monster appear, though I imagine folks who weren’t familiar with his campaign to host found it only about half as amusing as those who were familiar found it to be. It was beautiful that Jeff introduced him as his buddy who’s always wanted to be on the show. The two of them singing “Silver Bells” wasn’t particularly funny, but it was surreal (as with much of what is actually on Sesame Street). Who else was thinking of the time Isaac Asimov and Crystal Gayle sang the same? By the way, I think Jeff broke the record for longest time between two successive hosting appearances, a title previously held by, I believe, Drew Barrymore.  (Update: It turns out that Sigourney Weaver broke the record for longest gap when she hosted this past January, and the previous record-holder had been Madeline Kahn.  So, as far as I can surmise, the order for longest gaps goes: 1. Jeff Bridges [27 years], 2. Sigourney Weaver [24 years], 3. Madeline Kahn [18 years], 4. Drew Barrymore [17 years].) B+

A Message from Mark Zuckerberg Interrupted by Julian Assange
Again?! Oh. My. God. Is Assange going to be the MVP character of the season? It is quite the feat to appear on three episodes in a row and not be one bit stale. Unlike a lot of folks, I found this one funny despite disagreeing with Assange’s position. B

The Miley Cyrus Show
I was wondering where this sketch was last week, what with the bong hit and all. I thought that Jeff was going to take over as Billy Ray, but apparently they needed him to play Nick Nolte. It was a rather lazy Nick Nolte, which worked. Actually, it was probably the only style that would work with Jeff Bridges playing him. At least Jason’s Billy Ray this time was dumb instead of annoying. No need to go into specifics about Vanessa this time; y’all know the deal by now. The confused reaction from the fellow in the video clip was a good call. B+

Digital Short: I Just Had Sex
I loved when Akon shouted out his own name. Seriously, I love when musicians do that. The Lonely Island team could make a whole digital short around that. Also, it was nice to see Jorma, as the absence of his name lately in the writers list during the credits had me concerned. I guess he was just taking a break. I often find Akon’s work positively unsatisfactory, but when he is appropriately utilized, he is on. The tempo changes were among the delights, and they showed off the Lonely Island’s handle of music as well as comedy. In conclusion, Blake Lively and Jessica Alba would totally love to have sex with Andy and Jorma. I mean, come on – they’re comedians. A-

Larry King Live
There was a lot going on here; some of it stuck, a lot of it – not so much. Larry’s description of Dog the Bounty Hunter as looking like someone who doesn’t understand a dead bird was right on, but the highlights came from Larry’s discussion with Jermaine Jackson about Anna Nicole Smith (“Where were you when you got the call that Anna Nicole Smith was dead?” “Well, I was at home, and you called me.”) Was that based in reality? B

Underunderground Records: Crunkmas Karnival
This played like it could have been a series of outtakes from the spot for the Kickspit Underground Rock Festival from last year, but it must have been a shoot with a lot of footage, because they were able to assemble a second full package out of the outtakes. And it’s always nice to see Pizza the Hut getting some love. A-

Eminem and Lil Wayne perform “No Love”
That “night stands … full of open bibles” line always gets me. How many bibles does he have? Why does he need more than one? Anyway, Em and Weezy were suitably energetic. B+

Weekend Update
-The Jokes: About the best we can possibly expect from Seth Meyers. B
-The Segments: -Michael Steele: Can I get a what-what from my mama grizzlies for Kenan’s Michael Steele?! B+
-Weatherman Brad Pitt: Um, I’m pretty sure Brad Pitt sounds nothing like that. Actually, Taran’s impression was vaguely accurate. But I am positive that he doesn’t usually, if ever, make noises at the ends of his sentences. I usually appreciate visits from Angelina. B-
-Snooki, Stefon, and David Patterson sing “O, Christmas Tree”: I was won over by the sheer spectacle of three of the best current Update correspondents appearing together, but there is no way this particular segment can stand on its own. “Merry Christmas to everyone but New Jersey” was a solid punchline. B

This, You Call a Wonderful Life?!
SNL seems to be doing a lot of Jewish-based sketches lately. I’m starting to wonder if there is a finite limit to that source of humor. Once I realized that Ben Mankiewicz was one of the critics from the worst era of At the Movies, it became clear that his presence lended some extra, positive comedic heft. B

Jeff’d
Well, what do you know? Kenan can actually do another funny and accurate impression, along with his Cosby and Barkley. Forest Whitaker has quite the unusual public speaking voice. Anyway, I completely bought that Jeff Bridges would be the host of such a good-natured “prank” show. The segment with Billy Bob almost took it too far to the dark side. B+

Eminem performs “Won’t Back Down”/Lil’ Wayne performs “6 Foot 7 Foot”
Em looked plenty comfortable on the stage, but I think he would have served himself better by choosing something more hard-hitting, like “Not Afraid,” for his solo piece. Quickly jumping off the stage provided a smooth transition, but it didn’t lend any favors to Em’s performance. As for Weezy, Lil’ Wayne songs work best when you can hear what he is saying, which is why “No Love” worked so well, while “6 Foot 7 Foot” only worked sporadically. Both: B

Tunstall General Store
When you boil it down, the jokes in this sketch came from Jeff and K-Wiig making faces. And it actually worked, because there was a scene built around that face-making, and thus it wasn’t bludgeoningly obvious that we, the audience, were supposed to be laughing at these telegraphed funny faces. B-

A Holiday Message from the Kardashians
The Kwanzaa line was the best, partly because it followed the predictable Hannukah line. Why were they squirming/bouncing up and down? Do the real Kardashians actually do that? Abby sounded better than last time. As for Vanessa, as talented as she has been on SNL so far, Kourtney Kardashian is just not her thing. B

Overall
After watching many of this episode’s sketches for a second time, it became clear that there was a lot of replay value, and that is the most important quality for an episode to become a classic. That replay value is mostly thanks to the one-of-a-kind, laid-back nature of Jeff Bridges. This episode is also notable for reminding us that Abby Elliott is still a cast member on SNL and that she has a repertoire of impressions (Wynonna Judd, Angelina Jolie, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Khloe Kardashian) that are generally accurate and at times funny.

The first show of 2011 will feature Jim Carrey as host for the first time in nearly fifteen years (while the Black Keys will add to the evidence that 2010-2011 is the best season of all time for musical guests). There are several times when a host is announced, and I think that there is no way the show can be bad with that host, yet I am often proven wrong. But with Jim Carrey, there can be no doubt. As long as the writers just let him do his thing, Jim Carrey will get the results SNL needs. The first time he hosted he completely took over the show. It was as if he were a returning cast member revisiting his former stomping grounds. Jim did get his start on a sketch show – In Living Color. That SNL episode from May 1996 was like an episode of In Living Color imprinted on SNL. Let’s hope we get another imprinting in a few weeks.

Top 20 Countdown is taking a few end of the year weeks off to make room for the Top 40 of the year countdown, but that’s no reason for me to skip my revising.  I have never quite been able to figure out how VH1 determines the order of its Top 40 of the year.  It must have more to do than with just how the videos performed on the Top 20, if that even really matters at all.  The list is ostensibly a measure of how big a hit these songs were, which is hard to objectively measure perfectly.  As far as I am concerned, it is about ubiquity, and VH1 appears to agree, for the most part.  In addition to my normal revision in terms of the quality of the songs, I am also including some thoughts on how big I measured these hits to be, by noting those that charted too high or too low.  It is worth mentioning now that I do not know how “Teenage Dream” or “Nothin’ on You” missed the cut.  For the record, “Teenage Dream” would have been number 1 on my revision if it had made the countdown (and everything else remained the same).

When I began seriously following Saturday Night Live, it was during an era that featured a memorable cast, and a memorably bad Weekend Update anchor.  For much of SNL‘s history, Weekend Update has been a safe bet for some solid laughs in case the rest of the show was not up to snuff.  But from January 1998 to May 2000, it was always a struggle to get through.  Lately, though, I have begun to wonder: was Colin Quinn really as bad as I originally thought?  VH1 has begun airing SNL repeats, and I caught a few late nineties episodes, and, since Colin does not deserved to be lied to, I must admit that I did laugh a few times.
Maybe it is just a relief to watch somebody at the Update desk who is not current anchor Seth Meyers, the worst Weekend Update anchor (long-term anchor, anyway) of all time, whereas when Colin’s episodes originally aired, he was preceded by the best anchor in the show’s history (Norm MacDonald) and followed by the vibrant and energetic duo of Fey and Fallon.  While comparisons to Colin’s chronological neighbors could only be unfavorable to him, Seth’s notorious run has made it clear that it could have been worse.  Whereas Seth displays no ability (or interest) in interacting with the audience, such a skill was an unquestioned necessity during Colin’s time.  Colin never pulled off such interactions on Norm’s level, but now that I have given him a second look, I realize that what he could pull off made him endearing.  He never did settle into a comfortable rhythm with the timing of his Update jokes, and he knew it.  He also knew that there is a give-and-take between performer and audience on live TV, particularly in a format as intimate as reciting the news.  So he bartered with the crowd, asking that they allow his dumb punchlines and plainly blunt delivery and just enjoy themselves.  And boy, were a lot of his jokes dumb.  But then he would make a goofy face, I would laugh, and I would have to wonder if that dumbness was the point in the first place.
This appears to be a case in which you cannot fully know something until you hold it up against its opposite, or a bad version of the same.  Seth Meyers needs to vacate the Update desk immediately or dramatically improve, and if he wants to improve, he could learn a thing or two from, of all people, Colin Quinn.

Bill was quite the smarmy host, and Kenan was quite the doorman. The game show format supplies an endless supply of at least decent sketches. B

Digital Short: Stumblin’
A silly song to the tune of “9 to 5″ that wasn’t even that well-arranged, eh? Are the Lonely Island boys running out of ideas? Or are they just overworked? Maybe I’m being a bit harsh. There was that harmonica solo, to the tune of “Take My Breath Away” (a-wha?!). B-

Julian Assange Interrupts a Mastercard Message from Prison
He’s got my attention. Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper? You got it. B+

Sexually Speaking
This may have been the best Roger Brush appearance yet. He didn’t even have to ask everyone to speak up. B+

Paul McCartney performs “Jet”
When it started, I called it. This was a good choice, what with how guitar-heavy it is, as Paul’s strumming skills have not faded with age, though his voice has a bit. B+

Weekend Update
-The Jokes: Mmm, whatever.  Save for that white person snowman joke. B-
-The Segments: -Weekend Update Audio Caption of Prince Charles and Camilla: That is just plain silly. B-
-Stefon on New York’s Christmas Hotspots: Stefon is currently the best recurring character on Saturday Night Live. Instead of again ending it with Seth describing Stefon’s suggestions with some variation on the phrase “gay fantasy,” they brought in some new material, with the “glimpse into Seth Meyers” and the “nobody ever invites Stefon to normal Christmas.” Yet one thing remains the same: Bill cracks up, seemingly more and more each time, and he not only gets away with it, it is a major reason why Stefon is now a classic character. A

Holiday Jam
Does this mean anything to anybody? I imagine that a lot of people who work in schools ask themselves that question when shenanigans like these go down. Jay and Kenan were so into character that I imagine it may have been dangerous to be around them while this sketch was happening. B

Meryl Streep on Ice
This was basically Abby’s appearance as Meryl on Update last season transplanted to the ice. A little less timely, and a lot more nonsensical. B

Paul McCartney performs “Band on the Run”
More vocal-heavy than “Jet” and thus not quite on a sterling level. But who’s complaining? B

Broadway Cares
Was this Paul’s idea? Or was he just supremely willing to go along with it? Too bad for him (and Bill, and Jason even) that the material was lacking. C+

Paul McCartney performs “A Day in the Life”/”Give Peace a Chance”
It is great to have such a big ouevre that you can surprise people even when you play one of your classics. B+

Paul McCartney performs “Get Back”
It got cut off. I imagine the audience in the studio enjoyed the full performance. B

Overall
Allowing a musical guest on the level of McCartney four performances can be a good idea, but not as much when it’s done at the expense of a host on the level of Rudd. Not a classic episode, but there was a lot of good will. And a little Stefon can go a long way.

Why is “Please Don’t Go” moving up so high? It is no “Cooler Than Me.”
Also, this countdown features two of the most unnotable American Idol winners.

Cold Opening – WikiLeaks TMZ
The cold opening should always be reliable, and Bill Hader playing someone with an English (actually Australian in this case) accent is certainly reliable. I don’t know if Julian Assange is anything like the way Bill played him, but the accent allowed him to be in his comfort zone. This worked best when the political figures had no idea why the cameras were following them, and thus, the first bit, with Fred as Qaddafi, was the funniest. B+

Robert De Niro’s Monologue
I was watching De Niro’s first appearance as host recently, and in that monologue, he looked incredibly stiff. It barely lasted a minute; it looked like he couldn’t wait for it to be over. This time, he was actually willing to be funny. And scary at the same time. Damn straight New York is the home of EPCOT. A-

The Abacus Conundrum (and Other Books) by Harlan Kane
When all else fails, just come up with a list that includes a bunch of silly words. Also, any mention of Pokémon is generally automatically funny. De Niro’s bons mots provided the perfect interaction with the list: “Lot of good words in this one.” B+

What Up With That?
WUWT? has gotten to the point that I not only expect it to be the same thing each time, but I get excited about that sameness. Relatively few sketches can accomplish that. For a moment there, though, it looked like De Niro and Robin Williams were going to stop Deandre from doing what he always does. I debated among myself what was the best direction for the sketch to take at this point. It was unsurprising that Deandre would eventually start the music again, but this would have been the one way in which WUWT? should invite breaking the formula. Maybe that can happen eventually, perhaps on Kenan’s last show, but at the moment, I think this was the right way to go. But it wasn’t so cool that De Niro eventually just stopped talking and Williams did little more than mutter.
There was one area that did definitely require some mixing up – appeasing Lindsey Buckingham.  Thankfully, enough of an effort was put forth in that area. K-Wiig’s character taking off a succession of wigs was wild, and the top highlight was the “sequels, prequels, squeakquels, eagles, beagles, seagulls, peoples, weasels” progression. B+

Mr. Produce
This was basically the same thing over and over, but De Niro and Andy put enough of an effort into some of their lines to provide a few laughs. Also, De Niro said “Andy” at one point. B-

Digital Short: Party at Mr. Bernard’s
Well, isn’t that convenient? B-

Diddy-Dirty Money perform “Coming Home”
I thought that Diddy had given up rapping. And we were all happy about that. But this piece actually had an adequate degree of energy to it. B

Weekend Update
-The Jokes: Seth annoyed me with his Seth-ness only once or twice. B-
-The Segments: -The Kardashians: I did not realize that Khloe was that much freakishly taller than her sisters. Anyway, Abby and Vanessa couldn’t keep up with Nasim, but the butt joke worked for all parties involved. B
-Ryan Christopher from the Spider-Man musical: I am impressed that Andy kept his professionalism while hanging upside-down. The request for the Spider-Man upside-down smooch made this one memorable. B
-’80′s Aerobics Video Instructor Janet Judy Tran: Aerobics videos appear to be an obscure interest of K-Wiig’s. She didn’t convince the rest of us to share this interest, but she did try. C+

Little Fockers Set Visit
This was played to perfection by Bobby, who seems to have the spirit of a child. The Permanent Midnight reference was off the hook. B+

Blizzard Man
In the middle of the show, I was thinking how we haven’t seen the Blizzard Man in a while. Then lo and behold. I should have realized he could be appearing, what with Diddy as the musical guest. It would be great to see him again in two weeks with Eminem and Lil Wayne. De Niro in drag as Blizzy’s moms and Diddy hitting on her was too freaky for words. The MC Skat Kat was the nicest touch. B

La Revista Della Televisione con Vinny Vedecci
This took an unusual course, considering that Vinny had an Italian-American guest. The Deer Hunter bit and Vinny’s son on a bender (there’s Bobby as a kid again) were tops. This was the second sketch of the night featuring someone in a role originated by Will Forte (Taran in WUWT? was the first). Will could really eat spaghetti in an entertaining way. Too bad for Paul that he has to follow that up. B+

Bosley Hair Restoration
I miss the days when SNL would regularly rerun its best commercial parodies several times over the course of a season. That is hardly done anymore. It makes it feel that the show is its own separate universe. This commercial was a good choice for defining that culture this season. Orignial Grade: B+

A lot of yelling. C+

Who Do I Have to Screw to Get a Drink Around Here?
Clever. And Stiller’s appearance at the end sold it as a classic. I was reminded of “The Heat is On.” A-

At least this had a joke, unlike the last one of these. B-

Overall
So, check it: Before the show started, I was thinking how we were probably due for a What Up With That?, I was pining for the return of Blizzard Man, and when the Digital Short started, I identified it as a Weekend at Bernie’s parody as soon as mention was made of partying with the boss. I guess I know this show too well.
Anyway, this was bizarro SNL: the Short was a (relative) disappointment, and the cold opening and monologue were highlights. De Niro was looser than in his previous stints as host, but he is still one of the stiffest hosts ever.

A slight change of opinion on my part allows P!nk to avoid a distinction previously accomplished only by Daughtry.

A bit of a revision to my Oscar post from yesterday.  Regarding Visual Effects, I completely forgot to consider Tron: Legacy, which could very well blow away the two contenders that I mentioned – Hereafter and Inception.  As for Makeup, I really don’t know if Inception is the top contender or not (or if it is even a contender at all).  All I had to go on for this category was what awardsdaily.com - one of my main sources for Oscar news – had to offer, and according to the folks over there, only Inception and Shutter Island have been targeted as Makeup contenders so far.

Loyal readers of Jmunney’s Blog, I feel that I ought to update you on what topics I am planning to blog on in the near future.  I do this so that you have the chance to offer me advice on what direction I should take these posts and so that I have the opportunity to hear this advice.  Also, if there are any pop cultural topics that I have not thought of that you would like to hear my musings on, let me know.
